MEXICO. MEXICO. MEXICO. MEXICO. MEXICO
Dear friends, students, clients, and supporters of Barro.Co Clay Studio,
This letter marks a conscious and considered closing of an extraordinary chapter.
Barro.Co Clay Studio was never just a business—it was a living, breathing space of creation, connection, and learning. For ten years, it was a place where hands worked honestly, curiosity was encouraged, stories were exchanged, and creativity was treated with both seriousness and joy. To have founded and stewarded such a space, from 2013-2023, has been one of the great privileges of my life.
When the studio doors closed, I chose not to rush a farewell. Some things deserve time, silence, and thoughtful integration. The decision to close the studio was made with care and was shaped in part by developing a severe allergy to clay. For an artist, stepping away from a primary material takes both adjustment and acceptance. In the 3 years following the closure, I went through meaningful transitions that helped redefine my path and clarify what comes next. Through it all, Barro.Co Clay Studio stayed with me as a place of light, humor, and shared purpose—a reminder of what we built together and a starting point from which new proposals can emerge.
Barro.Co Clay Studio became a rare kind of community. People arrived from all over the world and met one another with openness, intelligence, and generosity. We shared far more than techniques and tools—we shared growth, laughter, experimentation and curiosity. In many ways, the studio evolved into a collective creative practice, one that enriched my life deeply and, I hope, left a lasting imprint on many of yours.
I carry vivid memories: birthday celebrations, music-filled days honoring beloved musicians—singing along to Prince, Leonard Cohen, and Aretha Franklin— spontaneous dance breaks, kiln firings at impossible hours, and the deep satisfaction of witnessing a student’s first piece emerge from the kiln whole and alive. My dogs—our unofficial mascots—were part of that magic too.
Equally meaningful were the collaborative and community-driven efforts that grew organically from the studio: mentoring scholarship students, welcoming accomplished artists new to clay, supporting animal rescue work, helping finance a young Mexican student through university, standing beside Doña María in her final years, and the many quiet acts of kindness that defined our small but formidable community.
I offer my deepest respect and gratitude to the people who helped run the studio with such care and excellence. To the employees who kept it immaculate, welcoming, and warm; who fueled us with fresh coffee and divine pastries; and to the after-hours clay fairies who quietly repaired, glazed, loaded, fired, and unloaded kilns, and sustained the studio’s rhythm—your work was indispensable. A would like give a special acknowledgment to the Guerrero sisters, Sara and Lupe. Quite simply, Barro.Co Clay Studio would not have existed without your tireless hard work and loyalty.
After a long and meaningful period of transformation, I now feel ready to let go of the studio as a business and move toward new aspirations. Barro.Co Clay Studio is complete in its original form and now enters a period of transition. I believe deeply in legacy and hope and trust that the right person will come forward to carry it on with wholeness, vision, and regard for what has been created.
The studio remains exactly as we left it—fully intact and alive with the energy of ten years of inspired work, as if class could begin again tomorrow. It is filled with history and a tangible life force for what lays ahead.
